Project summary
Design competition for the restoration and redevelopment of an existing art gallery in Krakow, Poland.
The existing location is the only brutalist building within the old town in Krakow. The brief was to restore the original features of the existing building and to expand the exhibition, administrative and service spaces of the gallery, including the café.
Our design approach focused on two main aspects: the restoration of the original features of the building by removing inconsistent or inadequate later additions, and the design of new, contrastingly light, new build additions in order to provide modern and flexible new exhibition and event spaces.
The proposed design is made of three major components: the complete removal of the existing roof, the creation of a new sunken garden and the new build exhibition spaces over the existing. This project was a successful team exercise of dealing with complex existing sites and creatively design new impactful exhibition spaces, which are both contemporary and successfully blend in with the existing structures.
